Wi-Fi or Ethernet for streaming: what actually changes

A cable will not make streaming faster in any sense you can perceive. What it changes is variability — and variability, not speed, is what stops playback.

The short answer is that Ethernet is better for streaming, but not for the reason usually given. It is not faster in any way you would notice. It is steadier, and steadiness is what playback actually depends on.

Why consistency beats speed here

A player holds a reserve of downloaded video and plays from it. As long as the reserve is topped up faster than it drains, playback continues. It does not matter whether the connection is delivering 20 Mbps or 500, provided it never stops.

Wi-Fi is a shared radio medium. Every device on the band takes turns, neighbouring networks compete for the same air, and microwaves, walls and distance all interfere. Throughput therefore varies second to second in a way a cable does not. A brief dropout in the middle of a stream empties the buffer, and that is a stall.

When Wi-Fi is genuinely enough

Often. A modern router in the same room as the television, on the 5 GHz band, with a household that is not saturating it, will carry 4K without difficulty.

The cases where it struggles are specific and recognisable:

  • The television is two or more solid walls from the router, or on a different floor.
  • The set is old enough that its wireless radio predates the current bands — the same ageing that affects its software.
  • You live somewhere dense, where many neighbouring networks share the same channels.
  • Several people stream simultaneously.

If a television is connecting on 2.4 GHz while a 5 GHz network is available, that alone can explain intermittent stalling. Many sets pick a band once and keep it, so it is worth checking rather than assuming.

If you cannot run a cable

In descending order of how well they usually work:

  1. A mesh node or access point near the television, ideally wired back to the router. This shortens the wireless hop to a few metres.
  2. Powerline adapters. Highly variable — excellent on some wiring, poor on others, and worse across separate circuits. Worth trying if returnable.
  3. Moving the router. Routers are frequently installed wherever the line enters the building, which is rarely the best position. A few metres and one fewer wall can matter more than new equipment.
  4. Changing the channel. In a congested area, moving off a crowded channel can be the whole fix and costs nothing.

What a cable will not fix

Ethernet only improves the link between the router and the device. It does nothing for a fault beyond the router.

If stalling persists on a cable, the cause is the connection itself, contention upstream, the device, or the service — which is what diagnosing buffering is for. Nor will a cable raise a stream's quality ceiling: if a service is serving standard definition to a 4K set, that is a different problem entirely.
