How much internet speed streaming actually needs
Most advice on this quotes numbers far above what the services themselves publish. Here are the official figures, and why the number you are told to check is not really the one that decides playback.
Almost every article on this subject quotes numbers considerably higher than the services themselves publish. It is worth starting with what the providers actually say, because the gap is large enough to change what connection you think you need.
The published figures
Netflix's own help documentation gives these as the recommended connection speeds for each quality tier:

These are per stream, not per household, and they are the point at which the service expects that tier to play reliably — not the point at which it becomes possible.
Why the headline number is the wrong thing to check
A speed test measures how fast a large transfer can run, right now, to a server chosen for being close and fast. Streaming asks a different question: can a modest, steady flow be sustained for two hours, from a specific service's delivery network, while everything else in the house continues?
Those come apart more often than people expect. A connection that tests at 300 Mbps and drops to nothing for four seconds every few minutes will stall playback that a rock-steady 20 Mbps line would carry without a flicker. The player is working from a buffer, and a buffer is emptied by interruptions, not by low averages.
Three things that matter more than peak speed
- Consistency. Sustained throughput with no gaps beats a high peak with dropouts.
- The path to that service. Speed tests measure a route you will never stream over. Two services on the same connection can behave differently because they are served from different places.
- What else is running. The figures above are per stream. Two 4K streams need roughly twice the headroom of one.
Resolution is not the same as quality
It is tempting to read the table as a quality ladder, but resolution and bitrate are separate. Resolution is how many pixels there are; bitrate is how much data describes them. A well-encoded 1080p stream at a generous bitrate can look better than a starved 4K one, because compression artefacts are far more visible than the pixel count.
This is why the same title can look noticeably different on two services at the same nominal resolution, and why "4K" on a specification sheet guarantees less than it appears to.
Working out what your household needs
Add up the streams you expect to run at once, at the tier you actually watch, then leave room:

The headroom column is not a service requirement; it is an allowance for everything a household does that is not video. Treat it as judgement rather than arithmetic.
What the services do when you fall short
Falling below the recommendation does not usually stop playback. Adaptive delivery means the player steps down to a lower rung and carries on, so the practical symptom of an under-provisioned connection is a softer picture rather than an error. That is the system working as designed, and it is why people are often unaware they have been watching well below the tier they pay for.
