Working out what is actually causing your buffering
Most buffering advice is a list of things to try. This is a way to find out which layer is at fault first, so you only fix the thing that is broken.
The usual advice is a list: restart the router, lower the quality, move closer, clear the cache. Some of it works some of the time, which is the problem — you never learn what was actually wrong, so it comes back.
Buffering has four possible homes: the service, the connection to it, your local network, or the device. Each test below is chosen to rule one of them in or out. The mechanism behind all of this is covered in how streaming video reaches your TV; this is only the procedure.
First, describe the symptom precisely
Two different faults get called buffering, and they point in opposite directions.

The four tests
1. Does it happen on another service?
Play something demanding on a different service, on the same device, at the same time of day.
If only one service stalls, the fault is that service or the path to it — its delivery network, its app, or your account's quality tier. Nothing about your connection or router will fix it. If everything stalls, continue.
2. Does it happen on another device?
Play the same content on a phone, on the same network.
If the phone is fine and the television is not, the fault is the television — its app, its processor, or its network hardware. Televisions frequently have weaker Wi-Fi radios than phones bought the same year, and this test exposes that immediately.
3. Does a cable fix it?
Connect the device by Ethernet, even temporarily with a long cable across the floor.
If stalling stops, the fault is Wi-Fi — signal, interference or congestion — and the fix is in the local network rather than the service or the connection. Wi-Fi or Ethernet for streaming covers what to do about it. If it persists on a cable, the local wireless network is exonerated.
4. Is it time-dependent?
Try the same content late at night.
If it only stalls during the evening peak, the constraint is contention — either within your household or upstream in your provider's network. This is the one case where the answer may genuinely be a different service tier or provider, and it is worth establishing before paying for one.

What is usually not the answer
- Buying more bandwidth. If a connection already meets the published figures, stalling is rarely a bandwidth shortage. More of something that was not the constraint changes nothing.
- Restarting the router as a diagnosis. It fixes some faults and hides others by resetting the symptom without explaining it. Useful as a step, useless as an answer.
- A different HDMI cable. HDMI carries the picture from the device to the screen. It has nothing to do with getting the stream from the internet.
- A VPN. It adds a hop and an encryption cost. It can occasionally help where a provider is genuinely throttling, but that should be established rather than assumed.
