Why a 4K TV plays a service in standard definition
A picture that starts soft and stays soft is a different fault from one that stalls. It is rarely your connection, and adding bandwidth will not move it.
There is a specific and confusing failure where a stream plays perfectly — no stalling, no spinner — but visibly soft, and stays that way for the whole programme. On a 4K television with a fast connection this feels like a fault, and it usually is not one. It is a ceiling being applied deliberately, somewhere in the chain.
First, separate it from buffering
The two get confused constantly and have almost nothing in common.

The four gates
A stream has to pass four separate checks to reach full resolution. Failing any one caps it, and the service almost never explains which.
1. The plan tier
The most common cause and the easiest to overlook. Several large services sell resolution as a plan feature, and some restrict 4K to their most expensive tier while others cap the cheaper tiers at 720p. A household plan changed months ago will produce exactly this symptom with no other sign.
Check the account's plan before anything technical.
2. Content protection level
Licensed content requires a level of hardware-backed protection before the service will send high-resolution video. That level is a property of the silicon, not of the app or the operating system, and it cannot be raised.
This is the reason a browser on a laptop often caps at 720p or 1080p while the same account plays 4K on a television. It is also why an older device may lose access to a tier it previously had, when a service raises its requirement.
3. Codec support
If a service delivers its highest tier in a codec the device cannot decode in hardware, the device is served a lower tier in an older codec instead. Nothing appears broken. As services move toward newer codecs, this quietly becomes more common on older hardware.
4. The connection chain
If an external device connects through a receiver, soundbar or switch, every link must support the required resolution, HDR format and protection version. One older link caps the whole chain — and the symptom is a downgrade rather than an error. HDMI versions and bandwidth covers what each generation carries.
Narrowing it down
- Check the plan. Free, and the most likely single cause.
- Try a different service. If only one is capped, it is that service's requirements meeting your device. If all are, suspect the device or the chain.
- Try a different device on the same television — a phone mirrored, or a separate streaming stick. If the second device reaches 4K, the first is the constraint.
- Connect the source directly to the television, bypassing any receiver or soundbar. If quality jumps, the intermediate device was the cap.
- Check the service's own playback information. Some expose the current resolution and bitrate during playback, which turns guesswork into a reading.
When there is no fix
Sometimes the honest conclusion is that a device has aged out of a tier. A television whose protection level or codec support no longer meets a service's current requirement cannot be updated into compliance, because both are fixed in hardware.
The practical response is the same as for software support ending: an inexpensive external device restores the capability without replacing a screen that is still perfectly good.
