What happens when a smart TV stops getting updates
A television lasts a decade. Its software does not. What ends when updates stop is not the picture but the apps — and the manufacturers have only recently started saying how long you get.
Televisions are bought like furniture and built like computers. The panel will still be excellent in ten years; the software running on it will not be maintained for anything like that long. The gap between those two lifespans is the single most underrated thing about buying a smart television.
What the manufacturers now commit to
Until recently, almost none of them said anything at all. That has changed, and the commitments are now specific enough to compare — though they generally apply only to sets from the year the promise was made onward, not retrospectively.
Reported commitments as of 2026 include Samsung offering seven years of Tizen updates for sets from 2024, LG offering five years through its webOS upgrade programme for sets from 2022, and Hisense stating eight years for VIDAA. These are worth checking directly against the manufacturer for the specific model, because the terms differ by region and by model tier.
What actually breaks
Support ending is not a switch. Nothing stops working on a particular date. The decline is gradual and follows a fairly consistent order.
- New apps stop appearing. Services launching after the platform stopped being a target simply never arrive.
- Existing apps stop being updated. They keep working, but they stop gaining features and stop tracking changes on the service's side.
- Apps start being withdrawn. When a service changes something the old app cannot handle — a new authentication scheme, a required protection level, a changed API — the app breaks and is removed rather than fixed.
- Security patches stop. The set remains connected to a home network without receiving fixes.
The third stage is where people notice, and it usually arrives as a service disappearing without warning from a television that is otherwise working perfectly.
The things that will not be fixed
Some limits are hardware, and no amount of support extends them. A set without a hardware decoder for a given codec will never gain one, so as services shift toward newer codecs an older set falls back to older formats or loses access. Content protection levels are similarly fixed in silicon, which is one reason an older set can end up capped below its own resolution.
This is the honest boundary of the update question: updates maintain software against a moving target, but they cannot add capability the hardware never had.
The practical response
The most effective answer is architectural rather than a purchase decision. Put an inexpensive, replaceable streaming device in front of a good screen, and the two lifespans stop being coupled.
