Up until now, making mobile content has been trial and error. But now you can actually study mobile movie-making at U.S. universities. MobilizedTV sat down with Bart Weiss, a professor in the film & video area of the art department of the University of Texas at Arlington. Prof. Weis has not only been teaching mobile movie-making to a group of students, but, as founder of VideoFest–a 22-year old video festival–has encouraged a mobile angle.

Why does the AFI get involved with digital?,” asked Nick De Martino, Senior Vice President, Media and Technology of the American Film Institute. “It’s about the storytelling. From the very beginning with the nickelodeon, the technology has enabled these stories to be delivered. What’s interesting to me is, does the platform influence the story or is the story eternal? What happens as the platform changes? Do people have to create technology platforms in order for the story to be fully told?”

The AFI Digital Content Lab has been an R&D incubator for innovative digital media and entertainment for 11 years. Volunteer mentors have worked with a wide range of innovators in 3 to 6-month periods of hands-on development, generating more than 90 digital media proof-of-concept prototypes.Every year, these projects are presented to the public at AFI DigiFest, a two-day event held in conjunction with AFI FEST. This year’s AFI DigiFest takes place Nov. 4 and 5th in Hollywood.

At a Digital Hollywood session last week, panelists considered the impact of GPS and location-based services (LBS) on mobile content and commerce. By 2014, there will be a 46 percent growth in GPS-enabled mobile phone shipments worldwide. “We’re seeing evidence there’s big growth here and that mobile commerce and location based services are overlapping. It looks like there’ll be traction.”

Nokia Hollywood Lab Inks USC Deal

The University of Southern California (USC) and Nokia Research Center (NRC) Hollywood today announced a research collaboration framework agreement that centers on advanced mobile user experiences. The umbrella framework agreement allows Nokia and USC to work together on multiple projects in a variety of areas and will streamline the process for commercializing USC inventions.
